Plot Summary

Dave Ming Chang (Eddie Murphy), newly arrived in New York City, may be the ultimate fish out of water. There’s something about him that’s not quite right – for starters, he seems remarkably out of place and uncomfortable in his own body. And for good reason: “Dave” is not a man at all, but a ship made in the image of its miniature-sized captain. It’s Eddie Murphy in Eddie Murphy in “Meet Dave.

Synopsis

Dave Ming Chang (Eddie Murphy), newly arrived in New York City, may be the ultimate fish out of water. There’s something about him that’s not quite right—for starters, he seems remarkably out of place and uncomfortable in his own body. And for good reason: “Dave” is not a man at all, but a ship made in the image of its miniaturesized captain.

So let’s meet Dave. He’s forty-something, pleasant looking and nattily dressed, even if his attire—an all-white suit, black tie and a neat black handkerchief tucked in his pocket—harkens back to the disco-centric ’70s. But beyond his odd apparel, there’s something not quite right about Dave. He’s definitely not from the neighborhood…not even close. Even the way he walks is….odd; as he makes his way through the streets of New York, one of his legs shoots out way too far with each step, like he’s not comfortable in his own body.

Reviews

Heralding a return to form for Eddie Murphy, this cleverly conceived and executed sci-fi comedy offers plenty of laughs for all ages. The considerable challenge for the filmmakers was to streamline three realities and make each one credible. Murphy excels in his dual roles and there is much hilarity as his alien spaceship Dave (built in the image of its captain, also played by Murphy) struggles to blend in with the humans he meets. It’s a double-dose fish out of water story with a twist and the script smartly looks at life from three perspectives - the real world, the spaceship’s world and the world within the world, where miniature aliens are struggling to cope with gushing torrents, when in fact Dave has simply drunk a glass of water.

The captain and his crew, a bunch of solid, humorless types from the planet Nil, make their transgalactic journey in a ship shaped like a realistic looking, human-scale version of its commander in chief. After a few awkward attempts at putting one foot in front of the other, the man-ship and its crew make their way into Manhattan, clad in a spiffing white three-piece suit like an interstellar Tom Wolfe.

Then something funny happened to these men: screenwriters Rob Greenberg (”How I Met Your Mother”) and riff virtuoso Bill Corbett (Crow deux on “Mystery Science Theater 3000″). The gentlemen have created an engaging sci-fi adventure for Murphy and Robbins, putting some genuine thought into the scenarios, locales, and punchlines of the picture, giving Robbins and Murphy a screenplay that even they couldn’t fully knucklehead up, despite their best efforts.
