Buying A Motorboat

Buying a new motor yacht is a long emotional process. We found it very difficult to choose between so many models. It’s not like buying a new laptop where you have a specification on memory, screen size, or processor. Buying a laptop, for me, came down to price really. I bought a mid priced laptop that could do all that I wanted. Now buying a motor boat was a whole different kettle of fish. It’s like buying a house. We wanted something that suited our lifestyle and suited our personality.

Motor boats can be used for various purposes, and the power that you would need would depend on the use of your craft. So the initial thing to decide is whether you want a  racing boat, a pontoon boat, a fishing boat  or one for some other purpose, because depending on this you will have to think about the kind of engine that your motor boat should have. Buying a new boat is a tricky business at the best of times, and never more so than when you’re fresh to the market. Get it right, and you’ll remember your first new boat as fondly as your first kiss. Get it wrong, and the bitter aftertaste could put you off the sport for life.

Start shopping around. Once you decide on the type of boat you want, start doing your research. Get online and check prices. Look at Boat Trader, eBay, Craig’s List, and other sources to get an idea of what motorboats are selling for. Talk to marina managers and harbor masters. They are likely to know if any boats are for sale in their areas. When a registered motor boat is sold, the new owner must apply for transfer or new owner re-registration within 14 days.
